Her Royal Highness Ashi Kesang Chodren Wangchuck: Key Note Statement

International Youth Day: Bridges of Wisdom

12 August 2026

Royal University of Bhutan, Thimphu

Good morning.

As I look around this room today. I see something meaningful.

Generations coming together. Young people full of dreams and endless possibilities. An older generation whose lives are rich with experience, resilience, and, most importantly, wisdom There is something powerful about people of all ages coming together with open hearts and a willingness to listen, learn and share with one another.

Today, we celebrate The United Nations International Youth Day.

It is a day to recognize and honour our youth because you matter.

Your voices matter, Your dreams matter. And the future you will shape matters.

More than four decades ago, His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, reminded us that "our children should be given every opportunity to develop their physical, mental and spiritual potential to the fullest extent."

Those words were never about education alone. They were about trust. They reflected a deep belief that every young person has with them the potential to flourish- in mind, body, spirit and character. The vision to inspire us today.

At the Gross National Happiness Centre Bhutan, we have always seen ourselves as builders of bridges. And every bridge begins with a desire to connect. A bridge between the young and the old. Between tradition and innovation. Between our inner wellbeing and the world around us. Between the wisdom of yesterday and the possibilities of tomorrow.

It is through these bridges that people come together, not simply to exchange ideas, but to understand one another. That is why today's theme, "Bridges of Wisdom,” feels especially meaningful.

As we listen to reflections from our elders, some may make us smile, surprise us, challenge us or leave deeply inspired. But every one of them carries a precious piece of wisdom.

Knowledge can be gained in classrooms and from textbooks, but much of our wisdom is shaped by lived experience. Some of life's greatest lessons come from mistakes that become turning points, hardships that build strength, and facts of kindness that change lives for the better. These lessons remind us of where we come from, help us understand who we are, and often serve as a quiet compass that guides our choices long after the voices that shared them have fallen silent.

Many of us grew up with stories shared by our grandparents, parents and elders. At the time, they may have seemed like simple tales. Only later do we realise they were teaching us about culture, compassion, courage, humility and perseverance. This is how wisdom travels, from one generation to the next. Each generation carries a part of Bhutan's journey. The older generation provides the foundation upon which we stand today.

Nations, too, are shaped by the stories they choose to tell about themselves. More than fifty years ago, Bhutan asked a question that changed the world's conversation:

What if the true measure of progress was not simply what we possess, but how we live?

From that question emerged, Gross National Happiness

Today, the world continues to look to Bhutan, not because we have all the answers, but because we had the courage to ask a different question. Gross National Happiness reminds us progress is not measured only by economic success but also by the wellbeing of our people, the strength of our communities, the health of our environment, and the values we choose to uphold.

As the next generation of Bhutanese, you are not only inheriting the vision of Gross National Happiness, but you are also shaping what it will become in a changing world. You have the opportunity to ensure that this vision continues to inspire and to make a difference.

The world you inherit will be very different from the one your parents and grandparents knew. Technology will change. The way we work will change. Our communities will change. Bhutan itself will continue to change, but amid all that change, the values that define who we are must continue to guide us.

As you begin writing the next chapters of Bhutan's future, I encourage you to pause and ask yourselves:

* What kind of person do I hope to become?

* What values will guide me, especially when no one is watching?

* Will my choices improve the wellbeing of others as well as my own?

* What legacy will I leave behind?

These are not questions with easy answers. They are questions that each of us must continue asking throughout our lives.

Questions that can guide us towards living with greater purpose for ourselves, for others and for the world.

Before I conclude, I would like to sincerely acknowledge the United Nations Bhutan, particularly the UN Youth Working Group, for partnering with the Gross National Happiness Centre Bhutan.

Together, we have created a space where young voices are heard and where meaningful conversations across generations can flourish. One of the greatest strengths of this partnership is our shared belief that young people are not merely beneficiaries of development; they are active partners in building a more successful and happier society.

I would also like to thank the Bhutan Stroke Foundation for volunteering to set up the Health Camp today. To our friends from Thailand, I am most grateful for your generosity in providing acupuncture treatments to our community. Your commitment to health and well-being are inspiring. Thank you for helping make our world healthier, stronger and happier.

To our respected elders:

offer my heartfelt gratitude. Thank you for sharing the experiences that have shaped our families, our communities and our nation. In doing so, you are offering something that cannot be bought, downloaded or replaced: the gift of perspective.

Perspective shows us that even when our journeys differ, we can still share a vision of a world where people and the planet thrive!

We hope our young people will not only hear your words but carry a part of your wisdom forward.

And to our youth:

Walk your path with wisdom and confidence, remain humble with gratitude, work hard with purpose, achieve success with integrity and stay committed to making our world a better place.

It is my hope that today will be a day when wisdom is shared, new ideas emerge, friendships are strengthened and communities grow closer. For our part, the Gross National Happiness Centre Bhutan remains committed to providing meaningful spaces where people can connect, reflect, grow, and discover a sense of purpose. We strive to inspire people to be healthy in body, enlightened in mind and noble in character.

As His Majesty the King has reminded us:

"You are the custodians of our nation's future. The responsibility to build a stronger, more prosperous and harmonious Bhutan rests in your hands."

May that future be one of peace, progress, and shared well-being.

May each generation leave something meaningful for the next, as we continue to build bridges of wisdom and understanding between generations.

Thank you. Tashi Delek

Thank you.
