GNH Centre Bhutan, in collaboration with UN Bhutan, Launches National Storytelling Initiative for International Youth Day: Bridges of Wisdom: Elder Stories to Inspire Young Voices

July 13, 2026

About the Initiative

Every generation inherits stories. Some are written in books, while others live in the memories of elders, passed from one conversation to the next. In Bhutan, these stories have long carried lessons of compassion, resilience, respect for nature, and community, values that continue to shape Gross National Happiness.

Bridges of Wisdom: Elder Stories to Inspire Young Voices is a national storytelling initiative by the GNH Centre Bhutan, in partnership with UN Bhutan, created to reconnect generations through the timeless tradition of storytelling.

As Bhutan continues to evolve in a rapidly changing world, the initiative recognises the importance of creating spaces where elders and young people can listen, learn, and reflect together. By sharing lived experiences, traditions, and personal stories, participants will explore how the wisdom of the past can help shape a more compassionate and resilient future.

More than a celebration of stories, Bridges of Wisdom is an invitation to rediscover the values that unite us and to strengthen the connections between generations.

What to expect

Turning these values into action, Bridges of Wisdom will feature Story Circles, Human Library sessions, panel discussions, interactive exhibitions, and cultural performances that encourage meaningful dialogue between generations. The programme will also include activities led by UN agencies and partners, including a session on Bhutan's food heritage organised in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Forum Bhutan Chapter.

Participants will also contribute their aspirations for Bhutan through the Wall of Change, while celebrating the country's rich cultural heritage through storytelling, music, and art.

As the inaugural edition of an annual initiative, Bridges of Wisdom reflects the shared commitment of the GNH Centre Bhutan and UN Bhutan to preserving Bhutan's living heritage and strengthening intergenerational connections in support of Gross National Happiness.
